Neuro Linguistic Programming
I’ve been seeing a lot of weird NLP stuff lately on Facebook. It’s nothing but lies. Here’s one example of it…
Successful people have a very specific belief system. They also have an ability to envision their lives, themselves and their futures in a way that brings their desires into reality.
Well, that’s clearly not an absolute truth, otherwise all of us would be exactly what we’ve envisioned ourselves to be. But let’s logically break this down…
This kind of thinking leads people to believe the lie that success is dependent upon a certain kind of thinking. Those who believe specific things will be more successful than those who do not. People who are successful envision their lives in a way that brings their desires into reality. Wow… sounds pretty cool. So, as long as I simply envision my life and my future, what I envision will come to pass? Wow, that’s cool. Kind of like rubbing a geanie bottle, and making some wishes to some random geanie person waiting to fulfill all my wishes. Or like those new State Farm commercials where someone has had an accident, and all they have to say is, “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there,” and the problem is remedied…taken care of. And then they envision something else they want there, too. Something crazy like Bob Barker, or a hot tub, or a stuff panda. Wow, that’s cool. So, this NLP thing is kind of the same thing? Like, if I want to envision myself driving a Ferrari, I can one day have a Ferrari as long as I believe certain things, or think about myself in certain ways? And that’s it? All I have to do is simply envision it in such a way that all my desires can be brought into reality? Sweet! Sign me up!
Who needs God when I’ve got all the ability within myself to accomplish all that I desire?! Success is dependent upon me! Nothing needs to hold me down because as long as I can continue to envision what I want for my life, then I will get it. Man, that’s so cool. That is until I get old, or don’t have the mental capacity to choose or envision what I want… or until I die. Yeah, death is a sure thing. But I guess if I buy into this NLP thing, maybe I won’t have to die. It’s almost like if I envision myself not dying, then I won’t die. Sweet! This NLP stuff sounds amazing!
Now, obviously I’m being a little sarcastic, and with good purpose. But NLP doesn’t solve the greater problem that humans have, namely, the sin problem. Sin is the cause for thinking that we could do things on our own in the first place, that we can live our selves apart from the One who made us, and brought us into this world. It screams, “I don’t need to be rescued! I can rescue myself!” Sin says that success is dependent on you, that you are in control of your life, and hey, as long as it feels good, who can judge you or call you into question on how you’re living your life. Hey, as long as you’re not hurting anyone, right? I mean, you’re just living the way that you feel life should be lived.
I know I’m rambling quite a bit, but if you ever see anything with the label NLP, run…
